Travelling can be a stressful experience. With all the waiting, security lines and delays, it’s no wonder that people are always looking for ways to pack light. Hold luggage is one way that you can cut down on the amount of stuff you bring with you. What is hold luggage? It’s any bag or piece of clothing that goes in your aeroplane cabin but not in your carry-on baggage. This includes things like sweaters, socks and toiletries which will be provided by either the airline or hotel staff depending on where you’re staying while travelling.
Hold luggage is a type of luggage you take with you during the flight, but it is not accessible. Your luggage will be taken from you when you check-in at the counter, where bangs and other luggage are dropped. Then It will be taken directly to the plane after scanning security checks. For speedy boarding, most airlines will allow you to hold luggage while remaining under the weight limit.
This hold luggage will be handed over to you when you arrive at your destination airport for departure. Aeroplane companies apply charges for the hold luggage, and it’s because the more the weight of luggage, the more fuel plane consumes to carry so always be careful while extra baggage.
What Is Hold Luggage?
As defined above, hold luggage is not accessible to you during flight so you need to know some rules for hold luggage and other things which are described below:
Rules for Hold Luggage
There are certain rules for hold luggage that you need to follow to make sure that you’re not breaking any regulations. The first rule is to carry on your hand luggage only, which means that anything in your hold baggage should be able to fit into the overhead compartment or under the seat in front of yours without blocking anyone’s way.
In addition, it’s important that all liquids are well below 100 millilitres and placed inside a clear plastic bag no bigger than 20cm x 15cm (without handles). This includes anything with water, teeth whitener and aerosols such as deodorant sprays or hair spray cans. All other liquids must go through security screening at check-in counters before they can go onboard an aircraft cabin; however, if you have more than one item then each container must meet the baggage allowance requirements.
You can divide your luggage into five different pieces per person. The maximum weight of luggage allowed per person is 50Kg, and each bag should be under 32Kg weight.
All items, including hand luggage and hold luggage, are scanned at the airport by security. So, pack your luggage in such a way that it shouldn’t take much time to unpack and pack again to avoid unwanted delays. Sometimes airport security doesn’t let you take the item they consider dangerous, whether typically allowed.
For example, liquids and aerosols are forbidden in the cabin.
In addition to that, all laptops need to be checked in at check-ins counters before they can go on an aircraft’s cabin as well. They’ll then be returned back after landing (provided there isn’t a security issue). You should also know about banned items such as knives or even scissors which may not cause any harm but still count as potential weapons, so you must take them out of your hold luggage and put them into hand baggage instead.
Electrical Devices and Appliances
The permission to carry electronic devices with you depends upon from which country you are boarding the plane. All airlines have their own rules regarding electrical equipment. So, check the airline on which you’ll be travelling that what kind of item they allow or prohibit to bring. Always bring electrical items with you fully charged. If the security asks you to turn on your device and it doesn’t turn on, they wouldn’t allow you to take that item because it’ll become suspicious.
When carrying electrical devices and appliances, make sure they do not exceed your total weight allowance otherwise they’ll be considered as hold luggage.
- The rules for carry-on baggage vary depending on where you are flying, whether you are taking a connecting flight or regular flight, to and from; it’s important to check with the airline before packing your bags
- All liquids must go through security screening at check-in counters, but if you have more than one item then each container must meet the requirements of the airlines’ size limits (under 100ml) and must come under your luggage allownace.
- If a passenger has anything that is going against airport safety regulations they should remove their items or leave them behind
- When carrying electronic devices make sure they don’t exceed your weight allowance because when declared as excess baggage these devices will count towards how much money passengers paid in advance for their ticket price.
Medicines and Medical Equipments
Medicines and medical equipment are allowed, but these are preferred to carry in in your hand luggage instead of hold luggage. You must have supporting documents with you for carrying these items with you, like a subscription for medicine in your name. Medical equipment is primarily allowed in the case while boarding if it is necessary for the journey.
Medicine must be of a reasonable quantity and you must have documentation to prove that it is necessary for the journey otherwise most European airlines do not allow them without prescription.
The camera is allowed in the hold luggage and in hand luggage too. Only some unique kinds of cameras are sometimes not allowed to carry like a professional HD video camera. Large cameras may result in extra weight in the hold luggage.
Restricted Items for Hold Luggage
Some items are not permissible to carry in your hold luggage for security purposes. Some of those items are as follow:
Lithium batteries with more than 100-watt hour capacity aren’t usually allowed. The electrical equipment in which lithium battery is used should be removable and set aside in the luggage. The device should be completely turned off.
Other Items That Are Not Permitted
The following things are not permitted as hold luggage while boarding on an airplane:
- Radioactive substances
- Toxic items
- Self-defense items like pepper sprays
- Biological hazardous items like a virus, bacteria, infected blood, etc.
- Fire Extinguishers
- Firearms and Explosives
Fireworks, ammunition, pistols, guns, daggers, and other items which fall in this category are not allowed because of security concerns.
What is the difference between hand and hold luggage?
The main difference between the two is that hand luggage must be carried by the passenger. Hold luggage can either be taken into your cabin or in some cases it will go straight to the belly of the plane and its arrival gate at the destination. It’s important to keep this distinction in mind so you don’t end up with a very heavy hold bag for most of your flight if you are carrying them both through check-in!
What is Baggage Allowance?
Baggage allowance is the number of kilograms that a person can hand carry or has as hold luggage. The baggage allowance varies depending on which airline you are flying with and some airlines will charge for any weight over their limit, so it’s best to check your carrier before packing too much. Normally, it is 32 Kg but you must check with your airline.
What Should I Know About Carry-On Baggage?
Carry-on baggage should include items such as clothes, toiletries, laptop charger (if you don’t have one built into your device), books/magazines for entertainment purposes during long flights…etc. It must also not exceed 100 pounds when packed and checked in at airport security gates because these items need to be placed under seats or overhead compartments once they’ve been
There are certain items which you may not be allowed to bring in your hand luggage and you’ll have to put them into the hold luggage. The most common item is liquids which cannot be brought on board because of security reasons. You should also keep any electronic devices out of your carry-on baggage, as it may not turn off when requested by an airport employee and this will result in a violation.
Make sure clothes do not exceed weight limits too or they will count towards how much money passengers paid for their ticket price
If someone has something that goes against safety regulations at airports they must remove items from checked bags or leave them behind altogether
Medicine is only allowed if it’s necessary for travel but requires supporting documents with prescription otherwise European airlines disallow medicines without a prescription.
